Homage Overkill – Amazing Fantasy #15

Amazing Fantasy #15 was the first appearance of Spider-Man, so it was obviously going to have some comics paying homage to it by referencing it’s famous cover, where Spidey is swinging through New York whilst carrying some dude under his arm. It’s completely fine to want to reference something that has influenced so much in the comic book industry, I don’t have a problem with that at all. What I do have a problem with is that it’s now been done. It’s been done soooo much.

Pretty much every somewhat-light-hearted comic book has done a version of this cover now (some even twice or thrice, as we will discover!) and it’s just not original any more. It’s safe and boring. It’s predictable.

I see it everywhere now! So I started collecting the covers of comics and other media that reference this famous cover. Some are worse than others, some were earlier and some are much more recent.

Which ones do you think are the worst/best? Is it really ‘paying homage’ any more or is it just a case of laziness and a lack of creativity?
